From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Gigi Hadid is the new face of Maybelline, it was announced this morning by the beauty brand.

Hadid revealed the news to her 1.5 million followers on Instagram in a video announcement.

She described to Vogue how the news was broken to her by her modelling agency IMG, when the contract was presented to her wrapped in a gift box.

“Being a Maybelline New York spokesperson means more to me than anyone can imagine; it doesn’t seem real! It’s the most incredible feeling and is a dream come true,” Hadid commented on the news.

“I feel so honored and humbled to be a part of the iconic brand I grew up with, and I am very excited by this opportunity.”

Hadid follows in the footsteps of an impressive list of models including Christy Turlington, Jourdan Dunn and Adriana Lima.

Hadid, real name Jelena Noura Hadid began her career as a reality TV star with appearances on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Turning her hand to modelling, Hadid, 19, has had a swift ascent in the fashion industry from walking in catwalk shows for the likes of Chanel, magazine editorials for Vogue, Elle, Paper, a coveted spot in the Pirelli calendar and numerous fashion campaigns, including for Tom Ford and Guess.

It was also revealed last month that Victoria's Secret has signed the model up to be the face of its younger line Pink.

Hadid follows in the footsteps of Kendall Jenner, another reality TV star turned model who also landed a major beauty campaign, Jenner's with Estee Lauder.

In an interview with The Independent last year, she talked about the merits of having a famous family:

“Yeah on one side we [Kendall Jenner and herself] have great families that have been in the spotlight and have taught a lot on that side of things, but we also have the work ethics to back it up. And I just want to be someone that is known because like to be working with me, even when they don’t know about my mum,”

The first Maybelline ad featuring its newest model will be released in October.
