From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

There wasn't a sequin in sight at last night's event hosted by BAFTA to honour the cast of period drama Downton Abbey, instead it was modern silhouettes that dominated the red carpet.

It's no surprise given its status as one of the nation's most-loved series, that it would go out with a bang. As fans gear up for the sixth and final series the cast and crew were out in force last night to mark the end of an era.

The historical drama is known for its well-dressed ladies and all were in attendance last night with flapper gear set aside in favour of more conventional red carpet attire.

Michelle Dockery opted not to channel her on-screen alter-ego Lady Mary, instead going for a classic monochrome ensemble by Valentino.

Black and white was a trend for the evening with Joanne Froggatt opting to wear a sleek white dress by Victoria Beckham. Lily James also kept it simple in a white dress by Ulyana Sergeenko.

Laura Carmichael broke from the pack, eschewing minimalism in favour of flying the flag for London Fashion Week favourite Erdem in a gothic floral gown.

Downton Abbey's last episode will be screened on Christmas day.
