The Met Gala is a decades-old celebration of costume design attended by scores of the most famous and powerful people in the world – but that doesn’t mean the internet is going to treat it with reverence.

Rihanna made the biggest splash with her giant yellow “pizza” dress, with its train so long she had to employ three people to scurry around behind her trying to make sure it didn’t engulf any unwitting photographers.

Among the eye-catching also-rans were Sarah Jessica Parker, channelling Jafar from Aladdin and Anne Hathaway with a strong tribute to Star Wars’ Princess Leia (perhaps in honour of the date).

Apparently when you arrive to these things is also very important, and Beyonce and her husband Jay Z rocked up so late that many photographers were giving up and leaving.

Most tweeters praised her outfit, however, and she led a trend of stars apparently deciding that with high-end fashion, less is more.

The theme of the evening was “China, and its artistic influence on the West” – going some way to explaining some of the outfits, at least. Rihanna’s was designed by Beijing-based Guo Pei, whose work is also on display in the Metropolitan Museum’s current exhibit “China: Through the Looking Glass”.

The Met Ball is, according to Wikipedia, the grand opening of the Met’s annual exhibit, and is “widely regarded as one of the most exclusive social events in New York”. Well done to all who made it in.
