Lady Gaga has raised the fashion stakes for the Met Gala before the event has even begun, wearing an extravagant dress to the pre-gala dinner.

On Sunday evening, Gaga attended Anna Wintour's dinner in New York City.

The singer, who is serving as a co-chair at this year's event, turned up at the soirée wearing a black and white striped, voluminous dress by Marc Jacobs, demonstrating how to embrace this year's theme "Camp: Notes on Fashion".

The 33-year-old accessorised with an ethereal black Philip Treacy fascinator, stiletto Pleaser boots and a miniature black Delvaux handbag.

The A Star Is Born actor shared a picture on Instagram of herself dressed in the eye-catching ensemble, with the caption: "Met Gala countdown."

Several Instagram users expressed their admiration over Gaga's other-worldly outfit.

"That purse," commented singer Janelle Monáe.

"HELL, YES! FLAWLESS!!! I love you @ladygaga," wrote Jacobs.

A number of people remarked on how the ensemble seemed reminiscent of Gaga's style during her "Born This Way" era, from the early 2010s.

"Can we talk about how the 'Born This Way' heels are back," one person stated.

This is the second Marc Jacobs outfit Gaga has worn in a matter of days, prompting speculation that she may wear an outfit by the American fashion designer on Monday evening.

On Friday, the "Bad Romance" singer shared a post on Instagram, showing the "camp" outfit she was wearing for her journey as she made her way to the Big Apple for the Met Gala.

The ensemble consisted of a lemon-patterned Marc Jacobs dress with a green, checkered shirt tied around her waist.

"I didn't shave my legs for four days which really completes the look," Gaga wrote in the Instagram caption.

Gaga is co-chairing this year's Met Gala alongside Wintour, tennis player Serena Williams, singer Harry Styles and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele.

This year will be the first time Styles has attended the annual bash, which is due to take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute on Monday 6 May.

Gaga, Williams and Michele have attended the Met Gala on multiple occasions over the years.
