From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Love Island might be fundamentally about romance, as its namesake suggests, but ITV2’s popular reality show has also thrust its stars into the sartorial spotlight, with this year’s contestants already being hailed as bona fide fashion influencers.

Global fashion search platform Lyst has been analysing emerging trends for the duration of the series, observing a spike in demand for lookalike products as seen on the Islanders throughout.

Lyst has compiled a report based on search traffic, identifying five contestants as the “biggest fashion influencers” in the villa due to online demand for their outfits and the impact their looks have had on sales and pageviews.

Coming in at first place is Georgia Steel, who Lyst have credited for bolstering demand for hoop earrings and thong swimwear.

However, the 20-year-old’s most-wanted look from the show was a navy tie front kimono sleeve playsuit by Missguided, who sponsor the show.

Megan Barton Hanson came in second place thanks to her white crochet jumper, also from Missguided, which was searched for more than 8,000 times in the two days after she wore it.

Josh Denzel was ranked as the third most influential, largely due to his impressive jewellery collection, with men’s gold pendants becoming the most-wanted piece of men’s jewellery over the course of the series.

His partner Kazimir Crossley followed-up in fourth place, with Lyst observing a 45 per cent rise in searches for “yellow crinkle bikinis” after she wore one on the programme.

Fifth place was occupied by Laura Anderson, whose pastel yellow denim jacket by Topshop generated an 81 per cent rise in searches for similar items the week after she wore it - it is still sold out.

Lyst also identified a series of key trends that have emerged as a direct result of the Islanders’ outfits:

Thong swimwear

Searches for thong bikinis, as seen on Georgia Steel, Laura Anderson and Megan Barton Hanson, have increased by 68 per cent in the last two months since the show started, with searches up by 41 per cent year on year.

Co-ords

Searches for co-ords, as worn by Dani Dyer and Samira Mighty, have increased by 120 per cent, with denim varieties proving the most sought-after.

Tassel earrings

Since the show started, there have been more than 20,000 searches for tassel earrings in the UK, which have been worn by a number of Islanders, including Laura Anderson and Kaz Crossley.

Silky PJ sets

Worn by Zara Holland and Georgia Steel, searches for silk PJ sets have gone up by 40 per cent in the last eight weeks.

Leopard print

Searches for the avant-garde animal print have risen by 71 per cent since the show started, with Samira Mighty and Rosie Williams both sporting the trend.

Orange
