With the new season upon us, in stores at least, finding a way to keep your finger firmly on the fashion pulse can be testing. Luckily, accessories offer a more transeasonal approach to real-world dressing and crystal mania is set to become one of the most versatile and wearable trends yet.
The vogue for more organic shapes, rough cuts and textures has seen a shower of precious stones setting the scene this season; whether it be a splash of tanzanite, amethyst or pyrite, raw-mineral jewellery is in the full flush of style. On the catwalk, designers broached uncut gems with a maximalist mood; at Givenchy a collection inspired by Egypt saw oversized slabs of blue semi-precious stones set a psychedelic tone while at Dries Van Noten an early 20th century femme fatale – Marchesa Luisa Casati – mused oversized, geometric drop necklaces.
Things took a more artful turn at Proenza Schouler though, where sixties and seventies art references saw a selection of mismatches dangling earrings add something more organic to an otherwise structured and linear collection. Similary, Elie Saab complimented dreamily ethereal looks with a manifold of rough cut rings and unenhanced gem stones begetting pendants and earrings.
Whether you choose to go full-size or slight, raw stones will anchor the most unassuming of outfits with a commanding regality. There’s something very zen about the rough nature of these unexpected shapes and materials that presents an air of romance, originality and timeless style to your wardrobe. The simplest and most wearable way to broach this trend is with a understated pendant but don’t be afraid to experiment with size or a pop of colour.
