From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With only few weeks to go to Royal Ascot 2016 and the wedding season hitting our calendars already, one might be panicking over outfit ideas and hats, but royal milliner Jane Taylor shares all the tips and tricks to choose a flattering hat design on your next buy.
Taylor is the creative mind and craftsmanship behind many of the Duchess of Cambridge's hats, including the one she wore for Princess Charlotte's christening last year.
"I'm honoured to be commissioned to create pieces for the royal family," she told The Independent. But with an eclectic and extensive shop on London's King's Road, where she also has her studio, her clientele, in general, is pretty high-end, with prices per hat ranging between £250 and £1,000. But besides her royal fans, she's gained huge celebrity following like Rita Ora and Paloma Faith.
Taylor launched her first bespoke collection in 2008, quickly establishing herself as the go-to hat designer.
Today, after many years of experience, she says that Royal Ascot is the busiest time for the studio, having very little sleep before the races to get them all done. “From six months before we are just so very busy, I think people leave it till the last minute.”
Best hats for your face shape to enhance the best of you this summer:
Round face: “Pick something a little angular to give definition. It compliments your bone structure.”
Square face: “Take something to soften it, for example, feathers, veiling and rounded shapes. Keep away from angular hats and keep the trims soft.”
Deep forehead: “Choose a piece that doesn’t give too much height, shallow crowns are best.”
Everyone: "Asymmetrical shapes and brims suit everyone and are very flattering along with rounded cocktail hats."
If you need further inspiration, Royal Ascot has collaborated with other British milliners of the likes of Steven Jones and Philip Treacy to create a capsule collection of hats.
See you glammed up down the races.
