Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Fine jewellery designer Solange Azagury-Partridge has designed an exclusive collection for Freedom at Topshop in support of the charity Eliminate Domestic Violence.

The four-piece collaboration consists of gold and silver plated pendant necklaces and earrings of what appears to be the silhouette of a woman on her knees, in fetal position, with her head in her hands. The design is delicate, but impactful as it symbolises Solange’s message of female empowerment.

The pieces are priced at £20 for the necklace and £16.50 for the earrings with 50 per cent of the proceeds donated to the charity EDV.

This year the fashion industry has stepped out against the social problem that affects so many women worldwide. Vogue Italia, for example, made the decision to feature violence against women as the cover story of its April edition with graphic images that felt like a blockbuster horror.

When speaking about the controversial shoot, the publication’s editor Franca Sozzani told The Independent: “It was not against men, it's about the fact that women have to be defended. And a lot of people are already doing something, because I know that even some other people in fashion are really committed to defending women and raising awareness, to empower women.”

With numbers of domestic violence cases growing, it’s comforting to see the attention it’s receiving. According to Women’s Aid one incident of domestic violence is reported every minute and “two women a week are killed by current of former male partner”.

Designer Solange, who is an advocate of Women’s Right’ organisation, said: “These delicate pieces embody the complexities and emotion felt worldwide in the endeavour to eliminate abuse in all its’ forms… The jewellery sits close to ones’ heart to symbolise a united front in fighting the unjust and wrongful violence on women and girls everywhere.

“It's a strong image for that very reason. And that's the strength behind this collection which is purposefully designed to be impactful, to make one take notice and face up to the reality of the hurt felt by the abused in our society.”

Solange is an award-winning jewellery designer and former Creative Director of Boucheron, while Freedom at Topshop is one of the biggest jewellery high-street brands in the UK, selling one item per second, meaning this is a strong partnership to raise funds and awareness.

Founder and Patron of EDV Global Foundation the Rt Hon Baroness Scotland, QC said: “We are thrilled to be working with Freedom at Topshop and Solange Azagury-Partridge on this exciting collaboration. Everyone that wears this special piece will be joining us in working to end violence against women around the world.”

The collection launches exclusively online at Topshop’s website on 25 November.
