Boots offer that rare sartorial combination of comfort and style. Slouchy suede numbers offer the Parisian cool for which Comptoir des Cotonniers has become known (£201, www.mothers-and-daughters.com). For the perfect complement to autumn's heritage look, classic riding boots offer old-school equestrian chic. Best of all, these can be made to order if you have trouble finding boots to fit ( £170, www.duo boots.com). If you've been pounding the pavements in flimsy ballet pumps all summer, it may be time to invest in some slightly sturdier choices.
