Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Fashion

Just when you thought Dover Street Market, the fashion emporium created by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, couldn't get any cooler, they go and build a pop-up store at London's St Martins Lane Hotel, home to the A-list hang-out Bungalow 8. Well, 'tis the season: there are pre-Christmas pop-ups everywhere, but not many offer such a range of fashion-forward festive treats. The six storeys of the shop have been edited into a slick capsule, including CDG diffusion lines Play and Shirt, as well as the store's own new label. Open now, until 8 January. Harriet Walker

Film

Where better to watch a trilogy of short films about our shifting landscapes than at the Eden Project. Anthem, a visually and aurally striking work from artist Beth Derbyshire, explores notions of national borders and the environment, charting her polar expedition with the eco organisation Cape Farewell with a video installation and an original score by the composer Ulrike Haage. Until 9 December, www.cape farewell.com/anthem Adam Jacques

Art

Do you fancy picking up an original work of art from Anish Kapoor, Gerhard Richter or Yoko Ono for £40 a pop? RCA Secret, the Royal College of Art's annual fund-raising contemporary-art exhibition, allows you to do just that, with one catch: while you can choose from any of the 2,500 postcard-sized pieces on display, from 800 artists including pros as well as students, you won't know who you've bought until you've received it. View pieces at www.rca.ac.uk/secret, sale day: 21 November; first come, first served AJ

Food & Drink

New private members' club Lux London (at the equally new and swanky Sanctum Soho Hotel) has come up with two novel ways of drawing punters in. First, it's allowing non-members to try out its rooftop lounge and weekend brunch club (from 1pm, complete with food, live DJs and tasty cocktails) until the end of the year. And even better for those with little ones, Sundays include a supervised film club, showing the likes of Up at the hotel's cinema, while you enjoy yourself upstairs. www.luxclublondon.com AJ

Books

The "definitive" guide to Scotland and "the only guide worth a damn", according to The Scotsman, publishes its 10th edition on St Andrew's Day, 30 November – and this time the author is sure he's got everything just right. Pete Irvine, also the creative director of Edinburgh's Hogmanay, has spent two decades producing a rare kind of guidebook: one that sells best in the country it is about. "I have pounded the streets [and] driven rather too fast for thousands of miles..." says the exhausted author. "I'm sure that Scotland the Best is the complete and critical picture of Scotland now." Published by Collins, priced £14.99 Katy Guest

Music

Looking for music, laughs and festive fun to make this a very merry Christmas? 'A Not So Silent Night', the Wainwright/ McGarrigle family Christmas concert, promises to be a cavalcade of carols and comedy featuring Kate, Rufus and Martha alongside Boy George, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, and the Scottish soprano Janis Kelly. Tickets start at £35 but there are also a limited number of £500 VIP packages with all proceeds going to Kate McGarrigle's cancer research charity. 'A Not So Silent Night' is at the Royal Albert Hall, London SW7, on 9 December (www.royalalberthall.com for details) Verity Reeves
