Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Former singer, Radio DJ and TV presenter Lauren Laverne rounds up London Fashion Weekend at the iconic Somerset House,as an Amex Insider, to bring in a sneak peek of the event that is accessible to everyone.

Vodafone London Fashion Weekend is accessible to everyone. What’s so special about this experience?

London is a global style capital, and London Fashion Week itself sets the template for what we will be wearing a few short months later. London Fashion Weekend is always an amazing opportunity for people who don't work in the industry itself to experience those things first hand. There are runway shows, shopping, hair and beauty panels, industry experts dispensing pearls of wisdom and (of course) shopping! It's British style at its best.

What have you been up to with American Express?

As Amex Insider, I’ve been working with American Express to get a sneak peek into some unique and exciting events available to Cardmembers. Following research commissioned by American Express which revealed that 94% of Brits admit to wearing the same ensemble up to ten times a month, I’ve been behind the scenes of London Fashion Weekend, looking into this season’s hottest trends and discovering how we can incorporate them into our wardrobes.

What’s your favourite trend for Spring/Summer 2014?

I like the psychedelic florals that are around at the moment. I don’t normally wear floral prints (they make me look about 100) but these are gutsy enough for me to pull off.

Which garment do you see yourself wearing the most this season?

I'd love Christopher Kane's diagrammatic botanical sweater, but I might have to settle for a high street tribute.

If you could describe London’s style in three words?

Street meets heritage!

Top three London-based designers?

Antipodium, Preen, YMC.

Favourite shops?

With two small boys and a busy work schedule I do almost all of my shopping online these days. If I ever get to shop, it’s at Liberty – the store is so beautiful, just walking around is a treat in itself. The buyers are pretty sensational as well – there’s rarely a dud item in their selection, so it’s great if you’re in a rush. Then I usually nip around the corner to Kingly Court, which has some great little one-off shops and cafés. Everything from Fur Coat No Knickers vintage dresses to Sweaty Betty fitness gear.

Festival season is almost upon us. If you could curate your own, who would headline?

Daft Punk! It’s a long-held dream to see them headline Glastonbury. If I can wave a magic wand I’d like LCD Sound system to reform and support, thanks.

Who are your personal top three new bands to watch in 2014?

I love Young Fathers, Lizzo and Afrikan Boy.

Are you excited about 6music Festival?

Of course! It’s a great way to celebrate a brilliant couple of years for the station and of course to share some fantastic music with the listeners. The Festival Fringe lineup is great as well. Lots of film, spoken word, acoustic performances and Q&As - and the tickets for that were given away in a free lottery, which makes it even better.
