From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It’s weighty, rugged and a dead cert at keeping out the cold but up until now, Shearling was something you were more likely to associate with the nation’s favourite wheeler-dealer, Del Boy, rather than up-to-the-minute high fashion.

Luckily, it’s had something of a makeover of late and made a welcome return to our winter wardrobes.

The shaggy textile was at the top of many designer’s wish lists and the eagle-eyed among you will have spotted it while binge-watching your favourite new Netflix series. Stranger Things saw thorny teen Nancy Wheeler don a shearling corduroy jacket in nearly every episode.

While designer renditions don’t come cheap, luckily for us Brits there’s the affordable high street to fall back on. Whether it’s the real deal or faux alternatives you’re after you’re guaranteed to be ready for the most biting of winter weather.

Coming in a surfeit of colour ways, from warm neutrals to riotously colourful hues, as a jacket, shearling can be worn oversized or fitted, just make sure the trim hugs the neck and/or the edges of the coat. Wear these with the season’s go-to knit of choice, the roll neck.

If the idea of wooly lapels is too excessive for your taste then why not opt for a simple accessory instead. From digit shielding gloves to bags and the softest luxury slippers, dressing in sheepskin has never been so easy, or as stylish.

For the ultimate in traditional, rare-breed shearling we suggest The Small Home’s Moccasins; handmade in the Polish Mountains using traditional techniques their contemporary design and vibrant colours promise you can wear the cosy fabric with confidence.
