Before this year’s Emmys, it was announced that the dress code for the typically glamorous affair would be “come as you are, but make an effort”, with stars encouraged to wear whatever outfit they felt most comfortable in, no matter how formal or informal.
While some virtual attendees chose to dress down for the event, the presenters tasked with giving several of the winners their awards looked notably smart, despite being decked out from head to toe in personal protective equipment.
Ahead of the ceremony, ABC shared a first look at the hazmat tuxedo suit that would be worn by presenters, emphasising in a press release that the outfit adhered to health and safety protocols amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“Not only is this a fun and irreverent visual, but it also ensures the health and safety of all of our winners and the presenter by following all of the health and safety protocols – with a twist,” the press release stated.
On the night of the Emmys, viewers were able to see the tuxedo hazmat suit-clad presenters in action, complete with a large black plastic bowtie on the front of their unusual ensembles.
Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara was given her award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series by one such presenter, the actor putting on a black face mask as she was handed her gold statuette.
Meanwhile, one of the most memorable moments of the evening came when Ramy star Ramy Youssef filmed a presenter in a hazmat suit waving and walking away when he lost in the three categories in which he was nominated.
“When you lose the Emmy”, the comedian, actor and writer captioned his viral video.
Several Twitter users expressed their incredulity over the appearance of presenters in hazmat tuxedos at the 2020 Emmy Awards.
“Y'all. They had somebody in a hazmat suit at every #Emmy nominee's house and when you lost they waved at your a** and peaced out. I'm screaming,” one person said.
“What the f*** they literally come to ur house in a hazmat suit with an Emmy and when you lose they just WAVE AND LEAVE LMAOOO,” another wrote.
