Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Christmas is just around the corner and at this stage the present buying panic is really starting to set in.

Whether it’s new saucepans or a pair of beige socks, a lot of us get it completely wrong when it comes to buying our loved ones the perfect gift. But what can we do to get it right this time round?

Supposing they’re super hard to buy for, or in the habit of buying everything they want for themselves, luckily there is a fail-proof option.

Can’t decide what to get? Then opt for a gift set. While handing someone a store voucher can feel like a bit of a cop out, holiday gift sets on the other hand retain that thoughtful component Christmas presents so heavily rely on.

What’s more, everything is laid out tantalisingly before your very eyes for super-easy buying. For beauty buffs, receiving a gift set is probably the holy grail of all offerings but, they can be fussy. Those in know will instantly recognise a cut-rate brand so to play it safe find out what brands they use at the moment, then go for something from them or one at a similar price point.

Cosmetic and pampering gifts are never a miss so be sure to stick to the classics. Cleansers, makeup brushes, nail polishes and fragrances all promise to be winners.

When it comes to the man in your life if he’s not entirely vocal about what he wants, finding the perfect gift can be tricky but grooming essentials are a great place to start. From wash bags to beard prep there really is something for everyone.

You can’t go wrong with a scent like the Mr Burberry Festive Luxury set. Not only does it come with a full sized bottle of the signature fragrance but it also includes a deodorant stick too.

If you’re really stuck, there are plenty of non-beauty related sets on offer but as the old saying goes, the quickest way to someone’s heart is with food.

For the style-conscious opt for something with a bit of flair; for this, we love Mast Brothers. The New York based chocolate makers offer meticulous confectionary that looks just as stunning as it tastes. Our favourite has to be the London collection; a six bar set that includes flavours like gin, black treacle and vanilla and smoke.
