Ahead of the 62nd annual awards show, the actor, who is known for his iconic and memorable outfits, arrived at the Staples Center dressed in a turquoise sparkly jumpsuit.
However, it was the accessories that made the Pose actor’s outfit. In addition to a short matching jacket, Porter paired the look with glittery silver boots, a choker, and a silver tasselled hat that acted as a curtain.
While posing on the red carpet, Porter’s hat, which happened to be motorised, began to open - revealing the actor’s eye-catching makeup.
For the Grammys, the actor opted for a silver lip colour and blue eye shadow outlined with silver.
Ahead of his arrival, the 50-year-old tweeted the details of his look, writing: “Get on my nerves, and the curtain closes! Living for my lewk styled by @sammyratelle with a custom design by @scottstudenberg of @bajaeast and featuring a custom hat by @sokolmillinery & mechanically engineered by @SM00TH_TECH.”
According to Porter and his stylist Sam Ratelle, who discussed the look with Vanity Fair, the outfit was inspired by Billie Eilish.
“Billy and Billie Eillish had a beautiful moment on the red carpet at the [American Music Awards] where they both gushed over each other's hats,” Ratelle revealed. “Billie was wearing a Victorian inspired beekeeper bonnet with netting covering her face. After the event, Billy jokingly told me he loved her look but after 30 years of working his way to Hollywood ‘Y'all are gonna see my face!’”
As for the message the outfit sends, Porter said it represents: "Get out the way, cause like it or not, here she comes!"
On social media, Porter has been praised as one of the best-dressed celebrities of the night.
“We get so much art from Billy Porter every time he steps onto a stage, a screen, or a red carpet, and I am so grateful,” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another said: “Billy Porter is fabulous and that’s the only thing you need to know about the Grammys.”
