Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Kevin Williamson, writer of I Know What You Did Last Summer

Screen debut: Williamson's first produced screenplay was Scream, which earned more than $100m in profits. Not bad for a $14m budget.

Horror help: Wes Craven, best known for creating Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series, was vaulted back into the spotlight after directing Scream.

Reel on: Since then, Williamson has signed a deal with Miramax for $20m to produce, write and direct several more films.

Beginnings: Williamson's script for Scream was inspired by his childhood fascination with horror movies.

Close to home: Williamson's latest movie, pictured right, takes place near the North Carolina fishing village where he grew up.

Coincidence? Both of Williamson's movies have featured a cast member from the American teen drama Party of Five.

Role reversal: Williamson started his career in front of the camera as an actor.

Sing along: When he moved to Hollywood he began as an assistant music video director.

A new star: The publication Entertainment Weekly included Williamson in its list of the 50 most creative people in Hollywood.
