Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Mood
Somewhere between the unreal and the surreal. A huge sporting resort set in 356 acres, styled according to the Europhile fantasies of its creator, architect Addison Mizner. Cross the Alhambra with Florence, throw in the Hurlingham Club, add a skyscraper and you get an idea.
Accommodation
Best for families is the Beach Club, right on the sea, which has interconnecting rooms.
Refuelling
Italian, French, seafood, you name it, and an excellent selection for children. As with practically anywhere else in the US, you can order one adult portion (always huge) and as many plates as you like.
Beach
Wonderful fine sand, although big Atlantic breakers can limit the swimming.
Activities
Excellent childcare programme daily, with clubs for various age groups. Parents are given a pager to keep in touch. The resort has a first-rate tennis centre, and a championship golf course. Adults' and children's lessons in both.
Fellow guests
Lots of American families, particularly New Yorkers. A few British, Germans and French.
Out and about
Take an airboat ride into the Everglades from nearby Loxahatchee. Drive up the coast to Palm Beach and see the extravagant mansions belonging to the Vanderbilts, Kennedys and Astors.
Sample prices
Seven nights (room only) from pounds 879 per adult, pounds 229 for children under 12 and pounds 129 for the under 2s. Includes return flights from Gatwick and car hire.
