Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Light Shining in Buckinghamshire

Caryl Churchill's remarkable play about the hopes of ordinary people and their fears of betrayal in the light of a new government. Sound familiar? Actually, it was written 20 years ago and this riveting story is set in the 17th century.

Merlin Theatre, Frome, Mon & Tue. St Thomas's Church, Isle of Wight, Thur-Sat

A Doll's House

Anthony Page's sensational production (right) is like a time-bomb waiting to go off. Janet McTeer is mesmerising as the young wife, partnered by Owen Teale giving a tremendous slow burn of a performance. Compulsive, compulsory viewing, with a staggeringly emotional finale.

Playhouse Theatre, London W1 (0171-638 8892)

Think No Evil of Us... My Life with Kenneth Williams

Even Kenneth Williams's dear friend Maggie Smith finds David Benson's characterisation of the late, great raconteur and performer quite uncanny. As if that weren't enough, Benson's show is acutely funny, moving and wholly unpredictable.

King's Head, London N1 (0171-226 1916)

Swan Lake

Drama, dance, lighting and design all combine to terrific effect to turn Tchaikovsky's classic into the sexiest, most dangerous, most theatrical thriller in town. The magnificent Lynn Seymour joins the cast at certain performances, adding tremendous icing to this truly unforgettable Christmas cake of a ballet.

Piccadilly Theatre, London W1 (0171-369 1734)

Much Ado About Nothing

Siobhan Redmond is heavily in demand after a knockout performance for Michael Boyd in The Trick is to Keep Breathing and screen success in Between the Lines. Boyd directs her and Alex Jennings as sparring partners in Shakespeare's great comedy of love and the limits of loyalty.

In preview, RSC Stratford, (01789-295623) opens Wed Rough Music

Show of Strength have an uncanny knack for digging up rarities and attracting intriguing scripts. Their latest premiere, by James Wilson, is billed as a cross between a historical detective tale and a compelling ghost story.
