This time of year sees many of the country's top clubs half empty following the festive period. Everyone is pretty much clubbed-out after New Year. The much-practised weekend ritual of heading for a club after Match of the Day has been replaced by Horlicks and slippers until energy levels are replenished.
Those of you who are reluctant to get fully back in the saddle can ease into the vibe at the Lava Lounge. Emerging nine months ago, it offers smooth easy listening; playing a classic blend of 1960s and 1970s tunes, including TV and film themes.
The Lava Lounge puts the emphasis on pleasure and style, and encourages patrons to dress accordingly. The crowd is a mixture of students, 20- to 30-somethings and jaded clubbers looking for something different.
Trade in monotonous house beats for a sophisticated "loungecore" vibe that embraces everything from Latin rhythms to Hammond grooves. Resident DJs Kwiatovsky and Tretchikoff take care of business on the decks in tandem with regular guests.
The chosen aesthetic embraces a plethora of styles. The scene is supplemented by slide and video projections of vintage ads, film and TV clips, and scenes of tropical fish and volcanoes.
This Tuesday sees the return of Europop DJ Pedro Gonzales, blending French, Italian and Spanish disco.
EYE ON THE NEW
Eyeball Arizona has built up a formidable reputation around the capital. If you like your garage uplifting then this night is pure easy listening. Subterania is a decent venue, but the decor is provided by the glamorous clientele. Be early; Marky P and Derek B are on the decks.
