Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Do you wake up disheartened every day of Advent, when you open your calendar window to find a little chocolate?

Perhaps you still feel dismayed by the prospect of new-fangled Advent calendars containing everything from gin to socks.

Is what you really want to find behind the window a pasty? Or perhaps a festive bake?

If that’s the case, good news: Greggs are releasing an Advent calendar. Yes, really.

Sadly it won’t actually be filled with warm pastry goodness, but each door reveals a token that can be taken into Greggs’ shops and exchanged for a different treat every day.

There’ll be tokens for food and drink off the Christmas menu, including the Festive Bake, flavoured lattes and a mince pie, as well as classic delights such as the sausage roll.

As with all Advent calendars, Christmas Eve brings the best gift - Greggs fans will receive either a £5 gift card or, if they’re amongst a lucky few, a card worth £25.

There are a limited number of the Advent calendars on sale in Greggs’ shops across the UK from Monday 20 November, priced at £24.

Whilst some people might consider the image of a sausage roll in a manger deeply disrespectful (as can be seen behind one window), Greggs see it as a bit of fun.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “Novelty advent calendars have been around for years, so we thought it was time to take the concept up a notch.

“Fans won’t be disappointed by what’s behind the doors - there’s a delicious Greggs gift to enjoy every day of the December advent season, from sausage rolls to Christmas sandwiches and of course our infamous Festive Bake. It’s the perfect Christmas gift for every Greggs fan.”

Each calendar is worth between £35 - £60, and the advent calendar vouchers can be redeemed in shops from 1 December up to and including 24 December 2017. Gift cards are valid for up to 12 months.

A treat from Greggs every day perhaps isn’t the best for your health, but it is Christmas after all...
