‘Tinsel is fine. But a personalised Labrador decoration is better’

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It might not be the first question that springs to mind when admiring the magnificent evergreen erected in your living room.
Nonetheless it’s a salient concern for those who operate within the glossy, Barbour-wearing culture perpetuated by society bible Tatler.
The magazine has rounded up a list of “posh Christmas tree decorations every Sloane should have” – and they range from the rakish to the downright ridiculous.
First up are the uncomfortably voodoo doll-like reincarnations of Hamlet (£14.50) and Mr Darcy (£11.99).
The former will make people think you’re smarter than you are, claims the magazine, while the latter will adhere to your inner “toff” desire to have your very own teeny tiny Darcy doll, something we can all relate too.
Then there are the equally eccentric – but no less bizarre – animal ornaments, because posh people are big on zoology, apparently.
There’s the majestic manifestation of a royal corgi (£9.99), an obvious choice, or there’s the more humble “Doggo” variation from Anthropologie (£26).
There's also the personalised Labrador bauble (£14.50), because even Christmas ornaments need a fancypants name in Tatler world.
For the most questionable of Sloanes there is “Lou the Llama” from Graham and Green (£5.99) - because what says Christmas more than a strangely horse-like llama bauble?
However, if you really want to push the festive boat out Tatler style, opt for Percy the peacock (£45), who will gently perch near the top of your tree while looking down at the less upmarket ornaments like the parvenu he is.
For those looking for the full regal decorative treatment, as many undoubtedly are, there’s also the Queen Elizabeth II glass decoration, which aptly comes in gold.
However, at £45, it’s definitely one to keep in the cupboard for next year.
Cost-per-hanging, and all that.
