Chopin, dinner, fine wine
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The St Ceciliatide International Festival of Music later this month celebrates the magical combination of wonderful music and vintage wines in the magnificent setting of Stationers' Hall in the City of London, and the festival is offering Independent on Sunday readers the chance to win a pair of tickets to one of the concerts in the series, followed by dinner.
Running from 20 to 28 November, the festival features George Melly, James Bowman singing Bach and Zelenka, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and a Festival commission by the film and television composer Geoffrey Burgon. The distinguished Lindsay String Quartet will perform Beethoven, and the Chappelle du Roi mark St Cecilia's Day itself - 22 November - by singing the Vespers for St Cecilia's Day based on the music of Francesco Guerrero, whose 400th anniversary it is. Outstanding musicianship is the hallmark of the festival.
The concert for which there are five pairs of tickets to be won is on Thursday 25 November and features pianist Fumiko Shiraga and the Yggdrasil Quartet performing Chopin's piano concertos Nos.1 and 2. Shiraga and the record producer Uli Schneider have reconstructed both chamber versions of these two lyrical concertos for string quartet and double bass. A London premiere, these pieces were recorded to great acclaim two years ago.
The black-tie evening begins with a champagne reception at 6.30pm, with the concert at 7pm. Dinner with vintage wines follows in the Stationers' Hall at 9pm. For the chance to win a pair of tickets for the evening - each pair worth pounds 176 - answer the following three questions:
1) How many piano concertos did Chopin write?
2) How old was Chopin when he died?
3) Which composer wrote the ode, "Hail! Bright Cecilia"?
Send your answers, with your name, address and day-time phone number to: St Ceciliatide Competition, Culture, Independent on Sunday, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5DL, to arrive by Friday 12 November. Senders of the first five correctly answered entries pulled from the hat after the closing date will each receive a pair of tickets to the Yggdrasil Quartet concert. No cash alternative. Editor's decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. Usual competition rules apply. Results to be published on 14 November.
