Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

If you haven't seen either of these classic Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn pictures you haven't lived. Bringing Up Baby is the one where Grant is a bespectacled palaeontologist who gets mixed up with Hepburn's eccentric heiress when her dog steals one of the bones of a dinosaur he is trying to reconstruct. As for Baby, well he's a pet leopard who is a pushover for the Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh song "I Can't Give You Anything But Love". Much of the plot was stolen by Peter Bogdanovich for What's Up Doc? with Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. Similar theft occurred with High Society, the musical remake of The Philadelphia Story. Delightful though Cole Porter's score is, it's not a patch on George Cukor's splendid original with Grant and James Stewart fighting over Hepburn as the filthy-rich beauty about to marry a stuffed shirt. Welcome back to the days of real dialogue.
