A history of Bethlem Royal Hospital which, founded in 1247, is the oldest hospital in the world caring for people with mental illness. On display will be archive material about the hospital that has never been made public before, as well as artworks by inmates (including `Insignificance or Self Contempt' (1854) by Richard Dadd, above). Bethlem Hospital's history reflects the medical world's attempt to understand and treat mental illness using cures that may appear arcane or cruel to modern sensibilities. Anne Lundregan
