Colin Davis conducts Sibelius, The Barbican, London EC1 (0171- 638 8891)
Five years ago, Colin Davis conducted the complete Sibelius symphonies with the LSO in what became one of the highlights of the year. Having recorded them for the second time (the coupling of numbers 1 and 4 has just won a Gramophone award), he is back conducting them live. Last Sunday he raised the roof with thrilling accounts of 1 and 2 (plus a melting encore of Valse Triste) and tonight it's the flowing Third and the dark Fourth, both of which provide ample opportunities for the LSO brass and woodwind sections to strut their considerable stuff. With Davis at the helm, I predict an rare evening of sensitivity, controlled power and sheer visceral excitement. Get there early and join the queue for returns. The season continues on the 23, 26 and 27 Nov. David Benedict
