And they are definitely not installing televisions.
Cy 3-5 Mill St, W1 (0171-629 8877) Provencal restaurant upstairs, dark, banquette-lined live music bar open to 3am downstairs. Definitely no soccer, but you can fill time discussing the bizarre seventies-street-scene mural on the back wall.
The Ritz Bar Piccadilly W1: one of the hotel bars where they don't make you feel like a prostitute if you go in without a man in tow. Elegant sofas, table service, terrific bloody Marys and top-notch mixed nuts.
Bar Coast 97-101 The Broadway, Mill Hill; 231 Lavender Hill, Clapham Junction; 50-54 High St, Putney: Cheerful, brightly decorated bars aimed at 20- and 30-somethings. You might have to shout over the music, but not over the cheers when Ukraine score against the Faroe islands.
Soho Brewing Co 41 Earlham St, WC2 (0171-240 0606) Swish and classy venue which deserves a mention. Excellent home-brewed beer, design-heavy environs, good atmosphere.
