Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

When Andrew and Patricia Davidson launched their glossy designer mail-order catalogue, Kingshill, in 1992 little could they have guessed that demand for the clothes it featured would practically double, year on year. Kingshill is now a well respected purveyor of classic British apparel from designers such as Betty Jackson, Amanda Wakeley, Paul Costelloe and the late Jean Muir, and has just launched its own, more affordable, capsule collection.

This season, as ever, there are clothes on offer that will satisfy any wardrobe need, but, (as the saying goes), if there is one dress to buy from the new catalogue, the Jean Muir wool shift shown above is it. Jean Muir was always adept at cutting a dress which suited any size from 10- 20 and looked flattering, classic and in tune with current trends without being a one-season wonder. Fortunately, her dedicated staff continue to produce clothes in this vein and this dress clearly embodies Muir's design sensibilities. The basic shift shape softly contours the body, the shoulder pads give the kind of structure usually given by a jacket, and the length is just on the right side of decent. Made of 100 per cent wool and fully lined, this is an investment dress that can be dressed up or down (but preferably up) and worn throughout the winter and spring months with confidence.

Jean Muir dress in damson only; style number PL04202, available in sizes in 10-20.
