Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Multimedia awards

Business use of multimedia is

more sophisticated than ever, and it will be on show in June at Multimedia '96. The exhibition is designed to show off the latest products and applications for marketing, presentations, information kiosks, retailing, videoconferencing and publishing.

Alongside the show, the British Interactive Multimedia Association (Bima) is holding a series of awards that will highlight the best in new media.

The Independent is sponsoring the "most innovative use of multimedia in business" award. This will be given to the best of the five individual category winners.

The categories are business (business-to-business presentations, employee and corporate communications and reference), corporate Web site, interactive displays, retail and training.

If you think you have a cracker, why not enter? The winners will be announced at the Bima Awards ceremony on 17 June, and will be displayed at Multimedia '96 from 18-20 June.

The deadline is imminent. Contact Jane Callaghan, Bima's secretary, immediately to enter. She is at 01733 245700 or 100744.2277@com puserve.com.

Sundays go online

The Independent on Sunday and Sunday Mirror have joined the daily titles online, via AOL. Most of the papers' text is included, and there is a conference centre where you can ask questions or make comments. Keywords are IOS and Sunday Mirror. If you want to sign up with AOL, which offers a range of its own services as well as easy access to the Internet access, ring 0800 279 1234. It costs pounds 5.95 a month, which includes five hours' free use.

Memory boost for PCs

Personal computer companies are at last supplying machines that can run the latest software effectively. A recent advertisement for Time Systems said it was now offering 16MB of RAM on some computers, because that is the best way of making Windows 95 run smoothly.

And Colossus Computer Corporation of Hertfordshire has announced it is fitting 16MB in 11 of its 12 "best buy" systems. Colossus explains why machines with enough memory have started appearing - RAM chip prices are finally starting to fall. Good news for consumers; bad news for RAM-raiders.
