At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. A woman who missed her £12,000 wedding after a catalogue of disasters was then dumped by her furious fiancé at the reception.

After “perfect” pre-wedding rehearsals, Nichola Tuohy, 46, from Hornchurch, Essex, saw her big day turn into a disaster when she couldn’t get to the church on time.

On the morning of her wedding, the mother-of-three visited a local department store to have her make-up done but when she saw the finished result she said she felt like crying and that she looked “like an extra from Towie.”

With just 90 minutes before the ceremony was due to start, she rushed home to wash it off and redo her make-up herself.

To make matters worse, Tuohy then received a text from a bridesmaid to say she couldn’t make it.

When she arrived home, her parents, who did not approve of the marriage, said that they would not be attending so Tuohy then had to take her two young children and drive to a nearby hotel to get ready where, after an issue with payment, she faced further delay.

“I could see the clock ticking and knew I didn't have long to get myself and the kids ready,” she told The Sun.

Once she arrived at the room, the stressed-out bride realised she had left her eight-year-old daughter’s dress at home and, with just one hour to go, she decided to call her fiancé, Darren Ferne.

“Our guests were already getting seated, and when he told me to hurry up that just stressed me even more.”

“I had a wave of panic and, exhausted, I just lay down defeated.

In the midst of what she described as a meltdown, Tuohy had just 30 minutes to get to the church which was 20 miles away.

But, just as she was about to make her way in a vintage car, she realised there weren’t any seatbelts for the children.

Undeterred, she went home to picked up her daughter's bridesmaid dress but realised she had already missed the wedding.

Instead, she drove her own car and went directly to the reception.

However, furious at being jilted, her fiancé ended things and walked out after the DJ asked for payment.

"It's not the kind of thing you can get over easily," he said.
