Blight fears as residents oppose traffic tunnels
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Furious residents have warned that Greenwich by-pass plans could leave the area blighted, writes Tony Bassett. They opposed diverting traffic from the town centre with tunnels - either along the foreshore or under Blackheath.
But Greenwich councillors have decided to continue launching a huge public consultation exercise on those and other options. The council's planning committee heard that a foreshore tunnel was preferred by consultants Colin Buchanan and Partner in a recent report for the council. But Mary Jacques, chairman of the anti-pollution group Gasp, said: 'Greenwich will become blighted. Reject the report in its entirety.'
James Suckling, from the pressure group Save Our Shoreline, said the 'incredibly misguided' foreshore route would threaten the historic waterfront, hit businesses, and affect the riverbank and navigation. 'It could be a multi-
million pound blunder.' Alan Brett, Greenwich Forum chairman, said: 'People are very angry about both these tunnel options.'
Mike Yates, committee chairman, defending the pounds 60,000 Buchanan study, said: 'Everyone here agrees something must be done about the traffic'.
