Billie Eilish is facing mixed reactions from fans after admitting that she accidentally ordered 70 boxes of cereal during lockdown because she did not realise how much one box is supposed to cost.

The 19-year-old shared the admission during an interview with Vanity Fair, where she revealed that she has been online shopping amid the pandemic, but does not know much about typical costs, having never been “an adult before”.

“I don’t know what things cost because I’ve never been an adult before. And, you know, I grew up with no money,” Eilish prefaced the story, before continuing: “It’s a really weird position I’m in. I feel kind of stupid because I’m like, I don’t know how much Froot Loops are.”

The bad guy singer, who is worth $53m according to Forbes, then recalled one instance where she paid $35 for what she thought was a box of Froot Loops – only to receive 70 boxes of the cereal.

“I tried to order one box of Froot Loops and I was like, Oh yeah, sure. It’s 35 dollars. I didn’t know that that’s expensive. I ordered 70 boxes,” she said.

On social media, the singer’s mistake was met with reactions ranging from amusement over the error to criticism for being “out of touch”.

“I aspire to be as rich as Billie Eilish not knowing how much one box of Froot Loops cereal costs and paying $35 with no questions asked,” one person tweeted.

Another said: “The perils of online shopping.”

However, others found Eilish’s story unbelievable, with some comparing their own experiences growing up without money to the singer’s.

“#BillieEilish claims she grew up without money and didn’t know what things cost. That she didn’t realise $35 for a box of cereal would be expensive. I call bullsh*t. I’ve been poor my entire life. I can guarantee you if there’s one thing a poor person knows it’s what things cost,” one person wrote.

Someone else tweeted: “But seriously, at 16 I knew how much cereal, shoes, a watch, a beach chair, and five gal of gas cost. I worry for my grandkid’s future.”

“Billie Eilish thinking a box of Froot Loops costs $35 is not cute…” another person wrote on Twitter. “What’s it like to be so out of touch that you think it’s funny and relatable to be that rich?”

Eilish, who was homeschooled along with her brother Finneas, first gained fame when she released her song Ocean Eyes when she was just 14.

With her album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which she released in 2019, Eilish made history when she became the youngest artist to win Grammys in the four major categories: Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Best New Artist.

Elsewhere in the interview, Eilish discussed her “horrible” relationship with her body and how being in the public eye has impacted her body image.

“To be quite honest with you, I only started wearing baggy clothes because of my body,” the singer told Vanity Fair, referencing paparazzi photos that circulated of her last year. “I was really, really glad though, mainly, that I’m in this place in my life, because if that had happened three years ago, when I was in the midst of my horrible body relationship – or dancing a ton, five years ago, I wasn’t really eating. I was, like, starving myself.

"I remember taking a pill that told me that it would make me lose weight and it only made me pee the bed – when I was 12. It’s just crazy."
