From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have received a handwritten letter from Barack Obama congratulating them on their engagement.
Earlier this month, the couple announced their engagement on Instagram in posts that showed off Lopez’s large emerald-cut diamond ring.
On Friday, Rodriguez posted a photograph of a letter penned by the former US president in which he shared his sage advice on how to have a long-lasting marriage.
“Michelle and I just wanted to congratulate you on your engagement,” Obama begins the letter, which is written on letter headed paper.
“After 26 years together, we can say that whatever challenges life may bring, sharing them with someone you love makes it all better. All the best, Barack Obama.”
Rodriguez shared a picture of the letter on Twitter with the caption: “This means the world to us.”
Barack and Michelle Obama married in 1992 after meeting at a Chicago-based law firm.
Meanwhile, the former New York Yankee player and American singer began dating in 2017 before Rodriguez’s proposal.
Last year, Lopez shared a photograph on Instagram of her husband-to-be with Obama at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference at which the men were both speaking.
"Ooooh...just my Macho and Mr. President hanging out backstage... @arod and @barackobama #obama #legendseries," the singer captioned the photo on Instagram.
Jennifer previously attended the White House Western Inaugural Ball in 2009 during Obama’s presidency with her ex-husband, singer Marc Anthony.
