Ariana Grande fans are convinced that the singer subtly referenced her ex-fiancé Pete Davidson in her new song Positions.

On Thursday, the 27-year-old released her new single and its accompanying music video, which sees the popstar imagining her life in the White House if she were president.

While fans are confident most of the lyrics are about Grande’s current boyfriend, Dalton Gomez, there is a theory that the first line in the song is about the Saturday Night Live star, who Grande separated from in 2018.

Grande begins the song: “Heaven sent you to me, I'm just hoping I don't repeat history,” pausing a beat between re and peat - which fans have taken as a reference to Davidson’s name.

“I don’t re.......................PETE history,” one person tweeted. “We get it Ms Grande, we get it.”

Another said: “Ari said... ‘Heaven sent you to me. I'm just hoping I don't repeat history.’ Re-PETE history. Pete Davidson! Cmon Ariana!”

“Lol is anyone else hearing it as ‘not tryna re-pete history’? #POSITIONS @ArianaGrande,” someone else wrote.

Grande and Davidson began dating in May 2018, before getting engaged shortly after. They ended their engagement after five months.

While Grande has not commented on the rumours, this wouldn’t be the first time she referenced her ex in a song.

In November, a month after they separated, the 7 Rings singer released Thank U, Next, in which she references Davidson, as well as her other exes.

“Thought I'd end up with Sean / But he wasn't a match / Wrote some songs about Ricky / Now I listen and laugh / Even almost got married / And for Pete, I'm so thankful / Wish I could say 'thank you' to Malcolm / 'Cause he was an angel,” she sings.
