Mischievous fool causes chaos in new Argos Christmas advert

The battle of the Christmas adverts is underway with a new launch from Argos joining the likes of Lidl and Asda who have already launched their festive camapigns.

This year, the retailer’s offering features a mischievous creature determined to ruin Christmas.

Titled The Christmas Fool, the 90-second clip follows an impish creature with bells on its long ears as it causes chaos about the house while families desperately try to put the finishing touches to their Christmas preparations.

From breaking fairy lights and stealing sellotape, to unwrapping presents and knocking the angel from the top of the Christmas tree, the ‘fool’ sets out to make as much mischief as possible.

But, just as it seems the fool’s destructive deeds will never end, an Argos Fast Track delivery driver comes to the rescue by putting the pesky creature into his van where it lands amongst an army of other fools who have also been captured.

The message behind the advert is that Argos is there to help everyone have a fool-proof Christmas this year thanks to its Click & Collect service, Fast Track home delivery and 250 stores and collection points.

Gary Kibble, marketing director at Argos, said: “Families across the UK work really hard to make their Christmas special, so when something doesn’t go to plan it feels as though there’s a mischievous force working against them.

“We created the fool as the cheeky embodiment of this frustration and the ad brings to life the tiny annoyances that can cause unnecessary festive chaos.”

Since the advert aired last night on ITV and Channel 4, it has received mixed reviews from people on social media.

While some praised the clip, others were quick to point out that scenes, like those which show parents wrapping presents, could suggest to children that Father Christmas doesn’t exist.

Similarly, a number of viewers thought that the creature was too frightening for a festive advert.

Another added: “Why Argos? Why? What were you thinking? Who pitched horrifying inside-out homunculus as the Christmas mascot?"
