Bourdain’s will was filed in Manhattan, New York, on Thursday - less than a month after his death by suicide on June 8 at the age of 61.
According to court documents obtained by New York Daily News, the Parts Unknown star’s estate includes $425,000 in savings, $35,000 in brokerage accounts, $250,000 in personal property, and $500,000 in “intangible property including royalties and residuals.”
The chef’s combined fortune is worth up to $1.21m, according to court records, in addition to a mortgage on a property worth $1.1m - despite previous reports that he had a fortune of $16m.
The will, which was written in 2016, leaves the majority to Ariane, Bourdain’s only child, whom he had with estranged wife Ottavia Busia-Bourdain.
Since Ariane is underage, a guardian will be court-appointed to protect her interests.
Had Ariane died before her father, the will states that her nanny, Myra Quizon, would have received the money.
Busia, who married the chef in 2007 but later separated from him after nine years of marriage, was named the executor of his estate and will also receive a portion of her late husband’s fortune.
At the time of Bourdain’s death, the divorce between Busia and Bourdain had not yet been finalised - meaning she is still legally his next of kin.
In addition to his “accumulated frequent flyer miles,” Busia will reportedly receive Bourdain’s “personal and household effects,” such as cars, clothing, household items, to “dispose of in accordance with what she believes to have been my wishes.”
Throughout his long and illustrious career in the culinary industry, the beloved chef advocated for lesser-known cheap eats around the world but revealed to People magazine before his death that one thing he liked to splurge on was chef’s knives.
“Chef’s knife. A really expensive chef’s knife, handmade,” he said.
Bourdain had a long battle with depression - which he occasionally discussed on his show. In one episode of Parts Unknown, the chef revealed to a therapist in Argentina that he often found himself in a "spiral of depression that can last for days."
His friends and family also knew of his internal battles - in an open letter, Rose McGowan, a friend of Bourdain's girlfriend Asia Argento, wrote that Bourdain's depression had "won."
He was also open about his past struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, however, a toxicology report revealed there were no narcotics in his system when he took his own life while staying in a hotel in France.
Following Bourdain’s death, Busia shared an emotional tribute to the celebrity chef on Instagram with a photo of their daughter singing on stage at a New York City music venue.
She wrote: “Our little girl had her concert today. She was amazing. So strong and brave. She wore the boots you bought her. I hope you are having a good trip, wherever you are.”
