Amy Schumer has called the controversy surrounding Hilaria Baldwin’s heritage “insane” after the yoga instructor was accused of “faking” her Spanish background.

The allegations started after a Twitter user questioned Ms Baldwin, who is married to actor Alec Baldwin, saying she had previously implied that she was born in Spain, when she was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and asked why she occasionally spoke with a Spanish accent when her first language is English.

Ms Baldwin ultimately responded to the theories in an Instagram video, in which she confirmed that she grew up in the United States. However, the 37-year-old insisted that she did not intentionally create a false narrative about her heritage.

“There is not something I’m doing wrong, and I think there is a difference between hiding and creating a boundary,” she told The New York Times.

Now, Schumer, who previously poked fun at the allegations that Ms Baldwin had been “pretending” to be Spanish, has spoken about the controversy again in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“I feel like it was so insane and entertaining that I think Hilaria is probably the only person who is happy about the insurrection in the Capitol, because it distracted [people] from that,” the comedian teased.

"She is amazing and I wish her and her family the best. And I hope she gets to visit Spain as much as she wants."

The I Feel Pretty star also revealed why she deleted a photograph of  Ms Baldwin cradling one of her children while wearing lingerie on Instagram, which Schumer had done so under the playful guise that it was her.

“It's a little insane to be in, like, lingerie with your baby. I just thought that was a little funny, and then I saw that she made a video and she seemed a little bit upset," Schumer said.

“Not at me, but about the comments she was getting. I was just like, 'I don't want to be mean,' and she seemed like maybe it hurt her feelings, so I just took it down.”

Schumer, who has a one-year-old son named Gene, added that she wanted to remove herself “out of the narrative” with regards to Ms Baldwin, who has five children.

“Look, she's a mum," she said. "She has a million and a half kids, and that's really hard. So I just, I don't want them to be going through a bad time. But also, you can't just pretend you're from Spain.”
