Aldi has commenced the Christmas advertising season with the launch of its new festive campaign.

The supermarket’s Kevin the Carrot character has returned for a third time to star in this year’s festive commercial, which aired last night on ITV.

The clip opens on a snowy winter night as an orange truck lit up in fairy lights winds through the road to music that states, “Kevin is coming” before the camera pans to reveal the crudité at the wheel of the lorry.

However, the Christmas cheer doesn’t last long as an avalanche hits the vehicle, knocking Kevin and his delivery of carrots off the road.

The advert ends with the truck dangling precariously over a cliff edge and a faint “help me” is heard before the hashtag #SaveKevin appears on screen.

Moments after the clip aired on television, a flurry of social media users shared their thoughts on the storyline.

“Woah @AldiUK...wasn’t expecting that! Who is going to #savekevin?” one person wrote.

Another added: “Oh no hope Kevin’s ok.”

Others were quick to point out the striking resemblance between Aldi’s advert and Coca Cola’s classic offering, from the lit up lorry to the music which sounds just like the brand’s own “Holidays are Coming” song.

“Fair play to ‪@AldiUK everyone there thinking the Coca Cola advert is on and then up pops Kevin the f***ing carrot, howling! one person joked.

Another commented: “#KevinTheCarrot stole the Coca Cola truck”.

The supermarket responded to the likeness, writing: “Our parody Christmas advertising campaigns are famous for capturing the anticipation of the season.

“This year is no exception using our trademark sense of humour and well-loved character, #KevinTheCarrot to capture the magic of families prepping for Christmas.”
