A Competition
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. An article in last Saturday's Independent attributed the direction of the film The Last Picture Show to Michael Bogdanov, the theatre director, rather than Peter Bogdanovich, the film director.
Correspondents have already seized upon the comic potential such misattributions might give rise to - a reader writes to say how much he treasures Terry Scott's Blade Runner and Bruce Forsyth's Local Hero. Why stop here? What are we bid for Douglas Adams's Watership Down? Anneka Rice's Interview with the Vampire? Mike Baldwin's Giovanni's Room? Readers are invited to suggest further happy accidents and to compose, in not more than 150 words, the opening scene or paragraph of these lost works. The best submissions will be published between Christmas and New Year. And there may be prizes - a first edition of Middlemarch by James Herriot, a bottle of the McCaskill malt, or a case of Derringer champagne, for example. Send your entries to Miss Nomer, Features Department, The Independent, 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5DL.
