I won’t miss Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump – not that he wasn’t fantastic at it
It’s not surprising that many now want the current president out of their creative lives, writes Charlotte Cripps
We have nearly have got rid of Donald Trump, and now people want him out of their creative lives.
The head writer of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has revealed that she is never going to work on another Trump sketch.
Rebecca Drysdale, who has quit Fallon’s talk show, has reportedly criticised the number of sketches that make fun of Trump, saying that they only strengthen his power.
She wrote in a private Facebook message: “I don’t believe that making fun of this man [Trump], doing impressions of him, or making him silly, is a good use of that power. It only adds to his.”
Alec Baldwin is also “overjoyed” to be retiring from playing Trump on Saturday Night Live (SNL) since Joe Biden was declared president-elect.
Responding to Biden’s win on Twitter, hours before he was due to play the president on SNL, Baldwin wrote: “I don’t believe I’ve ever been this overjoyed to lose a job before!”
Baldwin has had many memorable moments playing Trump since 2016. SNL hilariously mocked the US president’s dangerous comments about injecting disinfectants as a way to avoid getting Covid-19, and Baldwin’s Trump went head-to-head with Jim Carrey’s Biden in a typically outlandish manner.
But I won’t miss Baldwin’s Trump – not that he wasn’t fantastic at it. It's true we need to stop defanging monsters like Trump by making them funny. Like many others, I want to see the back of him in any shape or form.
