The Premier League manager merry-go-round continues to spin ever quicker
With expectations at the top level so high, bosses are never more than a few poor results away from the chop, writes Ben Burrows, as Nuno Espirito Santo departs Spurs
After only four months in charge, Nuno Espirito Santo has been dismissed as Tottenham Hotspur manager.
The ruthless nature of top-end football was shown in full this weekend as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, himself under severe pressure to keep his own job, earned himself a stay of execution with Manchester United's 3-0 win at Spurs on Saturday night.
The 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool of a week ago looked to be fatal for Solskjaer, but then came this much-needed result in north London for the Norwegian. It in turn proved the final nail for Nuno – with the Portuguese sacked on Monday morning after just 17 games in charge.
The former Wolves boss, only hired in the summer, ultimately paid the price for uninspiring performances and hugely disappointing results – the defeat on Saturday was a fifth in their last seven league matches.
Attention now turns to who will replace him, with Antonio Conte the early frontrunner to return and take up the challenge.
The Italian is a famously volatile character but is a proven winner having enjoyed success both in the Premier League – with Chelsea – and back in his native country with Juventus and, latterly, Inter Milan.
Whether he can turn Tottenham around – they currently sit eighth – remains to be seen. The club are betting that he will with a top four place and the Champions League qualification that comes with it absolutely crucial to a club of Spurs’ size.
The comings and goings of managers is always a challenge to report on with rumours constantly swirling as the season rolls on.
With expectations having never been higher, top-flight bosses are never more than a few poor results away from the chop with three succumbing this season already.
More will surely follow as the managerial merry-go-round continues to spin ever faster. We will continue to try and keep pace with it as best we can.
Yours,
Ben Burrows
