From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The 2010 Super Bowl was a big win for the New Orleans Saints, giving a boost to the spirits of the team's beleaguered city just as Mardi Gras celebrations get rolling. The CBS television network which broadast the game in the United States won, too, with the most-watched television program of the year also getting the biggest-ever ratings in TV history.

With an average of 106.5 million US households watching the thrilling last-minute 31-17 upset against the Indianapolis Colts, this year's Super Bowl broke records, beating out the previous holder of the all-time watched show, the finale episode of M*A*S*H in 1983, according to Nielsen numbers.

With high viewership, the other big winners were advertisers who shelled out $2.5 million per 30 seconds. Part of America's annual football championship ritual is the anticipation over the commercials, and the buzz in the days after the game has centered on viewers' favorite ads with polls determining the top spots, including some from national daily USA Today and YouTube.

The following are some of the top commercials in the polls:

 - Google's "Search On" campaign ("Parisian Love")
The world's biggest search engine charms audiences with a love-story search. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnsSUqgkDwU

- Mars Snickers "You're Not You When You're Hungry"
Actress Betty White ( The Golden Girls) takes a tackle showing her 88-year-old sense of humor.

Voting continues on YouTube's AdBlitz through February 14 so results may change but these favorites are based on initial response during the game. According to Mashable.com, an online social media guide, among the dozens of spots some of the most-viewed online were also the most disliked, such as the Motorola Megan Fox ad.

Google's "Parisian Love" ad got lots of views and high marks, as did the Doritos commercial. All of the nationwide Super Bowl spots are on available on Hulu which determined favorites by views and volume of Twitter feeds.

Other favorites include Volkswagen's "VW PunchDub" with Stevie Wonder, Budweiser Bull, and Audi's "Green Police," promoting its clean diesel vehicle, a tongue-in-cheek send-up of environmentalism and one of the highest viewed ads with 115.5 million watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml54UuAoLSo

Hollywood also bought time during the Super Bowl to show teasers for upcoming movies. According to a poll by MovieTickets.com, Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter was the most memorable and effective trailer with a score of 81. In second place was a trailer for Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe and tied in the third spot were trailers for Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and The Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro in the title role, in theaters this weekend.
