Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Copenhagen has inaugurated an artificial beach in the heart of the city to help locals and tourists get into summer.
The new beach, situated in Osterbro towards the north of the Danish capital, is more than 4,000 square meters in size and includes a 130 meter long pier for guests to stroll along.
The project has taken three years to complete and required high-tech cleaning devices to be installed, which cleanse the water using ultraviolet light to make sure it is safe for children and adults to swim in.
Despite being surrounded by a marina and several factories, visitors say that the beach is a great addition to Copenhagen.
"It is great to have a beach," said Mads Zeidler, a student from Copenhagen.
"I think most cities you can't go for a swim almost in the harbour, but in Copenhagen it is possible so that is great."
As well as the reclaimed beaches found in coastal cities such as Hong Kong, New York and Dubai, temporary beaches are becoming increasingly popular in major landlocked cities, with Berlin, Amsterdam, London, New York and Paris all constructing temporary sand beaches for the summer season.
