Cindy Parlow scored twice and added an assist for the Americans, who dropped to 3-5 in its 12-game series with the World team, intended to promote women's soccer.
Tiffeny Milbrett of the US team had one goal and assisted on two others. Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain each notched one goal and one assist for the Americans.
"From the start, all of the games have been competitive," said Canada's Charmaine Hooper, a former North Carolina State star who plays with the Chicago Cobras. "But I really don't think the Americans expected us to be as competitive, as physical as we are. Nobody's going to back down in these games."
Pretinha scored consecutive goals 1:56 apart in the third quarter to give the World team the lead for good. She got the go-ahead goal off a pass from fellow Brazilian Roseli just outside the penalty area and banged it into the back right of the nets.
"They have great players on the World team. We'd take any one of them in a second," Hamm said. "Those two Brazilians put on a clinic every game on how to handle the ball in tight spaces."
Hamm's goal off a rebound of a Chastain shot cut the margin to 7-5 and brought the loudest cheer of the game from the crowd of 13,121.
Roseli and Julie Murray of Australia each added fourth-quarter goals for the World before Pretinha topped off her night with a final score with 31 seconds left to play.
Roseli assisted on two of Pretinha's goals. Pretinha also added an assist on a second-quarter goal by Patience Avre of Nigeria.
The US team outshot the World team 36-33 over four quarters, but the many of the shots by the international stars came on from near point-blank range.
