Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The London Olympics was one of the most tweeted subjects of the year, according to the website 2012.twitter.com, with a tweet from Team GB retweeted over 67,000 times and 150 million tweets went out about the Games. The closing ceremonies (specifically, the Spice Girls’ performance) amassed the largest Games-related spike, 116,000+ Tweets per minute.
Barack Obama's "Four more years" tweet was the most repeated, with more than 810,000 retweets, the tweet, which included a picture of Obama hugging his wife Michelle, went global within two minutes of being sent.
Twitter was inundated with Hurricane #Sandy images, both fake and real. But this image of the natural disaster, tweeted from astronauts at the International Space Station, showed a unique perspective on the disaster.
Unsurprisingly, singer Justin Beiber, with his growing army of 31,321,770 "Beliebers" on Twitter, has a lot of social media clout. His tweet about the tragic death of Avalanna Routh, aka "Mrs Bieber" a six-year-old with brain cancer who he has previously met, gained 220,000 retweets and 100,000 "favourites" from fans.
The site doesn't mention where the Jubilee, Kate and Wills' wedding or #royalbaby announcement came in the ranking...perhaps it's only us Brits that considered it Twitter-worthy?
