Two James Collins goals gave Swindon a deserved lead against a much-changed Stoke team but second half goals from Kenwyne Jones and Walters took the game to extra-time. Aden Flint then put Swindon back in front only for Peter Crouch to level again. But the visitors were not to be denied and Collins completed his hat-trick at the death to make it 4-3.
Sunderland gave debuts to new signings Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher, which drew a crowd of nearly 23,000 to the Stadium of Light for a 2-0 win over Morecambe.
Wigan were 3-0 up at half-time at Nottingham Forest, Maynor Figueroa hitting a spectacular goal. It finished 4-1, with Wigan's Antolin Alcaraz sent off late on.
Aston Villa notched their first win of the season as they eased past Tranmere 3-0 at Villa Park, with Darren Bent on target. Southampton also shrugged off a poor start to the season, four second-half goals at Stevenage seeing off the League One side 4-1 at the Lamex Stadium, while new signing Jose Bosingwa scored as Queen's Park Rangers beat Walsall 3-0.
Another eye-catching result was League Two Burton Albion's 4-2 win at Leicester.
