Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

To celebrate the launch of its brand new game Blue Toad Murder Files: The Mysteries of Little Riddle on PC, Relentless Software has teamed up with the Independent to launch an exclusive competition for all budding writers.

Thrilling story-telling is at the heart of Blue Toad Murder Files. In each episode you solve a sensational ‘Whodunnit?’ only to be left with a cliff-hanger - making you long to play the next episode straight away!

So, fittingly, Relentless Software are challenging you to write your own murder mystery. There's one catch - your magnum opus can use no more than 7,500 words. You can find out more about Blue Toad Murder Files on the Facebook page or by visiting the website.

The prize is a writers' dream come true: a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop, a ‘Thrillers – Writing a Bestseller’ distance learning course from the London School of Journalism, and, of course, a copy of the game. And if that's not enough, the winning short story will also be published in full at www.bluetoadmurderfiles.co.uk.

The competition is sure to be hotly contested, so it'll be judged by one of the tutors at the London School of Journalism - experienced writers and journalists all - alongside a member of the Blue Toad Murder Files design team.

To enter this fabulous competition, just email your story to the following email address: competitions@relentless.co.uk putting BTMF Short Story Comp in the subject header.

Postal entries can also be sent to: BTMF Short Story Comp, Relentless Software, One Air Street, Brighton, BN1 3FB

The competition closes on January 31 2011.
