Sony has revealed a hidden tip that has been lurking in plain sight all along.

The company revealed that the hidden trophies aren't actually so hidden after all, and are just a button press away.

PlayStations offer players a series of rewards for achievements within the game, listing them all in a trophy cabinet – they might get given a trophy for defeating 100 enemies, for instance. But some of those trophies are hidden, meaning that users can't see how to get them, and making it far more difficult to fulfil the requirements.

Except they are not really hidden. They can be unlocked just by pressing square while looking at the trophy, PlayStation has revealed.

Numerous gamers voiced their shock at the previously unknown feature. But it turned out that – while it went largely undiscussed on the internet – it has actually been available for years.

PlayStation shared a Reddit post in which a user expressed their shock at the new feature. "We don't know who needs to hear this but," it wrote, before giving a screengrab.

“I’ve had a PS4 for almost five years,” it read. “I just now learned if you select a hidden trophy and press square it’ll tell you what the trophy is.”

In a follow-up post, PlayStation revealed that the change was made years ago. Asked when it had arrived, it wrote simply: "4.0 update in 2016".

Others joined in a chorus of replies to the tweet to point out other potentially hidden parts of the PlayStation software.

One revealed an accessibility option that allows users to press the PS button and square button at the same time to zoom into the screen, for instance. Another noted that double tapping the PS button in the middle of the controller switches between screens, allowing players to easily switch between the chat or trophy menus and the game itself.
