Developers said the game would stop working from 4am eastern time, or 8am GMT. Epic Games did not say when it would be back online.
The outage is to allow the new update to the game – version 4.2 – to be installed.
That had been delayed after an "issue" was found that had to be fixed before it could be pushed out to players. But the delay could have caused some problem over the last day, as people waited for the update to arrive.
Epic hadn't said when the new update would be released. But it came just 24 hours after it was scheduled.
"We’ve discovered an issue that’s going to delay the release of v4.2," developers wrote on Twitter. "Due to this delay some quests may not function until the build releases.
"We’ll update you once we have a more accurate time frame."
