Your support makes all the difference. The inclusion of US president Ronald Reagan in the forthcoming first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has prompted a mixed reaction from people online.
Reagan is still beloved by many Republicans for his “Reaganomics” economic policies, but remains a controversial figure due to his handling of (among other things) the Aids crisis, the Iran-Contra scandal, and the War on Drugs.
A uncannily realistic CGI rendering of the late president was seen in the recently released trailer for Cold War.
As revealed in the trailer, the game will see Reagan send a CIA Black Ops team on an illegal overseas mission during the US-Russian Cold War.
Many people complained about the representation of Reagan on Twitter, and other social media sites.
One commenter wrote: “I kind of hate everything about Black Ops Cold Wars’s depiction of Ronald Reagan as All-American Cold Warrior Who Knows What Needs to be Done Despite the Need for Plausible Deniability.”
“This is the future of gaming,” joked another. ”We can finally render Ronald Reagan’s wrinkles in HD.”
Another likened the depiction of the US president to a “Westworld robot”, while several people described the CGI Reagan as “cursed”.
It has also been revealed that Cold War will give players the option to play as a non-gendered character – a nod towards progressive politics that some have claimed jars with the game’s presentation of Reagan.
“I am genuinely f***ing losing my mind over the concept of Ronald Reagan using they/them pronouns while telling you to do war crimes in the new Call of Duty“, said one Twitter user.
One person joked about the forthcoming PS5 game Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, writing: “Ratchet & Clank looks absolutely delightful. I hope they do not put Ronald Reagan in it.”
