Crucial decisions in the future of the UK’s relationship with the European Union (EU) are to be made this autumn, as the 29 March 2019 divorce date draws ever closer.
Brexit minister Dominic Raab said he was “stubbornly optimistic” and “as confident as before, if not more” that there will be a deal, while Theresa May has insisted she will “not be pushed” into compromises not in the national interest.
But some are not so sure about the Government's claims.
Britain’s third biggest union, the GMB, backed a second referendum, saying the promises made during the first vote were “not the reality we are facing”.
The Independent revealed this week a major UK study had found more than 2.6 million people have abandoned their support for Brexit and now back staying in the EU.
If those who have changed their minds had voted to stay in the EU in 2016, the referendum would have delivered a clear Remain verdict.
The figures strengthen the argument for a second referendum, amid warnings Brexit will seriously harm the economy.
The Independent has launched a petition for a Final Say vote, which has been signed by almost 750,000 people.
Whether you support leaving or remaining in the EU, you can call for a poll on the final Brexit deal by signing the appeal and by attending The Independent and the People’s Vote March in central London on 20 October.
To register your interest, and make it clear you support another vote, sign up to the march on the event page.
